The Career Nobody Told You About: How to Become an External Expert

There is a career path where companies pay for your expertise, not your time. Consultants, mentors, interim managers: external experts who choose their projects, set their rates, and work on their own terms. And almost nobody talks about how to get there.
In this session, I share what I learned from nearly 500 company audits and my own journey from employee to independent expert. You will discover:
What external experts actually do, how their work is structured, and what companies really pay for
Which skills matter most in this career, and why no job will ever teach you them
How to build your name before you need it, even if self-promotion makes you cringe
The first steps you can take while still employed, without risking everything overnight
Your experience is an asset. This talk is about turning it into options: more freedom, more choice, and work that runs on your terms. You do not need to be braver than you are today. You need a map. I am bringing one.

Iwona Borawska

Founder at The Process

Over the past 20+ years, I have helped more than 2,000 companies grow by a combined 2 billion PLN. I have worked as a trainer, consultant, head of sales, and C-level manager. I have built 6 companies of my own, with 2 exits behind me. I know what running a business looks like from the founder’s seat, because I have been there myself, and still am. In late 2025, I founded The Process®, an interim management agency for Polish SMEs. I work the way I love most: on my own terms, as an external expert.

And that is exactly what I teach. I show female managers and specialists how to turn their corporate experience into a career as an external expert: how to build a personal brand, win their first clients, and manage their career and time on their own terms.

I document this journey on Instagram [@iwona_borawska], and I talk about my work on my podcast „O skalowaniu” (On Scaling) on YouTube.
